A Minister of Education who focuses on school coexistence

Right away later on the 2010 earthquake, at Fundación Semilla we took on the process of supporting faculties in the devastated spot of the O’Higgins Region, by means of Write-up Traumatic Worry Containment programmes. Soon following, we realised that the anxiety was caused by the violence in the university context and its ecosystem, and not by the content losses professional by the overall inhabitants of these territories.

Abuse, bullying, sexual harassment, authoritarianism, deficiency of dialogue, discrimination, deficiency of participation and numerous other violent behaviours ended up normalised, generating a large stage of worry in the different strata. The earthquake had been a fantastic justification to handle a subject that experienced been taboo in educational establishments till then. Our existence was a healthful catalyst for the neighborhood to confront its truth of violence.

Nowadays we confront a comparable problem, since the pandemic and non-attendance courses are remaining seemed at as “the” cause of violence in faculty contexts and, while there may well be some challenges derived from isolation and absence of socialisation, the leads to of violence or undesirable coexistence are structural in nature. Society has transformed, but the society and the instructional technique have not tailored to the new times.

The Minister of Education, Marco Antonio Avila, introduced this week the “Well-getting and Coexistence Strategy” for the school technique and pointed out that “this method considers the shipping and delivery of pedagogical means to assist academic communities, direct intervention steps to assist instructional establishments with critical instances and the creation of an Advisory Council for Coexistence and Non-Violence, which delivers together 13 authorities in mental well being, perfectly-getting and coexistence, who will be in charge of guiding public policies in the shorter and long expression in this area”.

Although coexistence is a public coverage that has been provided in ministerial programmes for some yrs, this is the 1st time that a Minister of Education has focused on faculty coexistence. At Fundación Semilla we are happy that our executive director, Matías Nieto, has been invited to consider aspect in this function. It is a recognition of his profession and that of Semilla, which has analyzed, researched, created pedagogical tools and applied programmes in the area of school coexistence.

The antonym of violence is coexistence, and the latter is realized via instruction that develops socio-psychological skills. Confronting violence and endorsing coexistence in faculty contexts is not only an moral problem, but also has fundamental implications at the individual and collective level with an impact on places this sort of as academic overall performance, well being, citizenship and social cohesion.

We hope that school communities will rise to this obstacle and think the implementation of the typical rules issued by the Ministry that aim on university coexistence, assuming a potent involvement of College Councils for territorial adaptation so that its technique is sustainable in excess of time.
